Week 2: My Tek Journey

 Our District has been 1:1 since 2012 for all 5th-12th grade students. The year we began the 1:1 initiative I was at one of the two pilot Intermediate schools in the district. I received extensive training on the learning management system that we would be using, Schoology. Eventually, we would adopt the program for Blended Learning from the Zuckerberg Foundation, the Learning Summit, called Connect. Now all 5th-12th students are enrolled in Connect. I have also had training and taught the Rotation style of Blended learning when I taught Intermediate school. 

I am not required to at the High School level. However, I have taken what I was taught and implemented it in my art room. It also made switching to teaching in the pandemic much easier than teachers who did not have the training I had. I love using Loom, having my students take progress photos of their work and storing it in google drive, and turning their work into Schoology. It is like a digital portfolio.

I could go on, however, I will save some for the rest of the semester!

    Wow! That sounds amazing! I have never heard of loom, what is that? Connected to google? I guess I will have to keep reading to find out:)

    It's amazing that your district has been 1:1 since 2012! Honestly, it took a pandemic to get the technology for students that we desperately needed. I'm sure your districts use of technology made the transition to distance learning much smoother than ours! Like Barbara, I have not used Loom! I've heard of it but would love to learn more! Thanks for sharing.

    Our 4-8th grade has just become 1:1 with our Chromebooks and it has been wonderful! I have never used Loom, and I am looking forward to discovering more about this program. Is Loom connected to Google Classroom?

    I have not used Schoology. We have several schools in the Catholic system who use it. It sounds like you have a good start on this course.

    Sounds like you were in a great position for the rapid switch to online learning. Loom sounds like a great program- creating a digital portfolio is a great way for students to store their work and to look at their progress.

Week 8: Remind Messaging App

  Remind is the most invaluable communication app out there for educators to use to stay in touch with students and parents. It has even evolved into a system much like Google Voice, where you can call parents and students from your personal cell phone and it will hide your phone number.  Another great feature of this app is that translates to over seventy languages. This translation is a two-way street. You can translate your messages before you send them, or the recipient can translate them to their preferred language once they receive a message from you. I teach in a Title One District that has a 98% Latinx population, so this has become my go-to way to communicate with parents and students over phone calls. Week 15: Dangerously Irrelevant

Since this is our final blog of the semester, I thought I would give my thoughts on how following this page has gone for me as an educator. I like that there is a page for educators that is not afraid to dip their toes into politics. I think education is political, and too many are afraid to broach the subject as such. Scott Mcleod has found a way to not only be political but thought-provoking, relevant, bring technology and leadership to the forefront of this blog. He started a podcast this past year called  Silver Lining for Learning  that chronicles issues globally and how they intersect here with the United States Education system. If you have time, I would check out the podcasts, they are enlightening and relevant to what we have learned this semester.
