Deadname Remover Extension


This extension has been a great help for our LGBTQIA+ students who are virtual. We are using Google Meet and it forces the students to use their legal name. At the begging of the year, a lot of our Trans and Non-Binary students were not showing up to class because they did not want their deadname to be on the screen. At first, the principal was against this extension, but once I showed her that extension was safe, she got on board so that students would start coming to class. 

It is a very simple extension to use. The user simply puts in the name that they want to use and clicks to hide their deadname when signed in to any application. I know Zoom will let you use any name. However, Google Meet in our district is set up so that you have to use the name associated with your school district email.  Here is an easy-to-use infographic of how to use the extension. 


If you have been trying to find ways to be any Ally to your LGBTQIA+ student population during the pandemic, this has been a great tool to show students you care about them and respect their choices.

    I've never heard of this extension or anything like it. It's great that there is a tool to help support your students and ensure that they feel comfortable coming to class! Great infographic showing how to use it and I'm glad that it's been a solution for your students!

    I have not heard of this and think it's great! I know in zoom that kids can rename themselves if the teacher allows it. Thank you for sharing this!

    Hi Sylvia and Barbara,
    This extension is not well known, however, it is a great tool when teachers, programs, or districts force students to use their deadnames. I was having a problem at the begining of the year with some of my LGBTQIA+ students not coming to virtual class because their deadname would be showing. This is such a simple solution!

    Tara, this is an AMAZING tool for educators to use. I don't have any students this year (that I know of) who have had the need to change their deadname online, but I know there are an incredible number of teachers out there that do have students who need to change their deadname online. Week 8: Remind Messaging App

  Remind is the most invaluable communication app out there for educators to use to stay in touch with students and parents. It has even evolved into a system much like Google Voice, where you can call parents and students from your personal cell phone and it will hide your phone number.  Another great feature of this app is that translates to over seventy languages. This translation is a two-way street. You can translate your messages before you send them, or the recipient can translate them to their preferred language once they receive a message from you. I teach in a Title One District that has a 98% Latinx population, so this has become my go-to way to communicate with parents and students over phone calls. Week 15: Dangerously Irrelevant

Since this is our final blog of the semester, I thought I would give my thoughts on how following this page has gone for me as an educator. I like that there is a page for educators that is not afraid to dip their toes into politics. I think education is political, and too many are afraid to broach the subject as such. Scott Mcleod has found a way to not only be political but thought-provoking, relevant, bring technology and leadership to the forefront of this blog. He started a podcast this past year called  Silver Lining for Learning  that chronicles issues globally and how they intersect here with the United States Education system. If you have time, I would check out the podcasts, they are enlightening and relevant to what we have learned this semester.
