Week 13: Discovery Education


 

Discovery Education has come a long way since its inception. Unfortunately, it is not free, however, most districts I know do have a license to this amazing resource. This started out as just a way to watch Discovery videos at school, however, it now has so many more features. You can make Assessments from the videos you show, create PLCs and Educator Networks, classrooms to show content to certain classes, and create content by standards.


You can also create Channels that align with your subject, content, and grade level. They have great historical and current events in their database. It is great for all ages and content areas. They even have an SEL section.  It also begins to make suggestions for you after a while from what you show in your class on your channel. 


You can also create boards with content and quizzes you can share with students or educators. You search the database for the videos and then you make the questions to go with the videos.

If your district does not have a license to this great resource, I would look into it. There is a free trial to see how it all works. Also, the pricing is not outrageous!

    Holy Cow that looks cool! You have some great information to share every week and I really appreciate all the visuals! I am going to have to take a closer look at this (realistically over the summer:)

      It is a great resource. I know it is a lot information, but you can do so much with it. Definitely take the summer to take a closer look at it!

    Tara, while I don't think that this is something I would use in my math class, I could definitely see its potential in other content classes or even my advisory (homeroom) classes. We have been trying to find ways to spend some funds (what a problem to have!) and I wonder if we could get a license for the school to use this. Thanks for the new website! -Jackie W13

      What a wonderful problem to have! They have some great SEL resources that would be great for Advisory classes. If your district is willing to pay for the license, it is a great resource.

    This looks like a great resource! I like that it has something for multiple content areas and it seems like a great way to get students interested and engaged. I will have to look at this and see if it's something my school would want to purchase!

      It has resources for almost every content area. If you put together a presentation, I am sure your school would at least look into getting one license for you to try it out and see if it is worth doing for the whole school.

    This looks like an amazing teaching resource! I like the idea that you can create channels based on content/ topic. I also think this is an engaging tool to capture students' learning and understanding of the information via the quizzes and responses features.

      Hi Kayla,
      They have content separated by grade levels, so it is perfect for every teacher. It goes from K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12. Then the content is separated by by subject and SEL. It is very easy to navigate and the quizzes and assessments are very easy to make. If your district/school is willing checking into a license for at least you to try for a year. Also, being able to create PLCs and teams is a great way to collaborate.

    Hey Tara,
    This looks like an incredible resource! I like how it will start to suggest things for you based on your previous searches. I think that this tool would be really engaging for students of all ages because it has so many different activities, and it’s so realistic looking! Thank you for sharing, and I’m going to check into this to see if my school has a license. Does it integrate well with Schoology?

      Hi Alexa,
      It does not integrate well with LMS. The best way I have found to integrate Discovery into Schoology is by providing a QR codes to the students that will take them to where I want them to do in Discovery Education.

Week 8: Remind Messaging App

  Remind is the most invaluable communication app out there for educators to use to stay in touch with students and parents. It has even evolved into a system much like Google Voice, where you can call parents and students from your personal cell phone and it will hide your phone number.  Another great feature of this app is that translates to over seventy languages. This translation is a two-way street. You can translate your messages before you send them, or the recipient can translate them to their preferred language once they receive a message from you. I teach in a Title One District that has a 98% Latinx population, so this has become my go-to way to communicate with parents and students over phone calls. Week 15: Dangerously Irrelevant

Since this is our final blog of the semester, I thought I would give my thoughts on how following this page has gone for me as an educator. I like that there is a page for educators that is not afraid to dip their toes into politics. I think education is political, and too many are afraid to broach the subject as such. Scott Mcleod has found a way to not only be political but thought-provoking, relevant, bring technology and leadership to the forefront of this blog. He started a podcast this past year called  Silver Lining for Learning  that chronicles issues globally and how they intersect here with the United States Education system. If you have time, I would check out the podcasts, they are enlightening and relevant to what we have learned this semester.
